Finding Prevention, Treatment and Recovery Programs

Sources of support for prevention, treatment and recovery are numerous and are not always linked. Many projects and initiatives use a combination of funding sources that can dictate who gets service and which services you're eligible for. It's possible to successfully navigate the addiction and mental health system, but most people need help. Sometimes "rough spots" or gaps in the system can detract from a youth or family member's recovery experience. Our recovery coaches can work with you to provide effective advocacy, act as an intermediary if you don't know where to start, and help you make the most of recovery opportunities.

The terms "prevention," "treatment" and "recovery" can be confusing to nonprofessionals as they are sometimes used interchangeably when alcohol and other drug problems are discussed.

  • "Prevention" seeks to keep youth safe and alcohol- and drug-free. Prevention programs and initiatives focus on strengthening our youth, family and communities and intervening before serious problems with alcohol and drugs begin.

  • "Treatment" is part of "recovery." However, treatment works to decrease the clinical symptoms of alcohol and drug use and recovery is an ongoing process that supports the health of the whole person including their physical, mental, spiritual and emotional capacities. Youth use patterns are not always the same and progression may be much more rapid in youth as they move from use, to abuse or dependence far faster than most adults. Family and environmental concerns may vary widely with situation, culture, ethnicity and even geographic region. Family recovery and support is often needed as parents can sometimes get confused about the parental role, the buddy role, the authoritarian role, and may have trouble being consistent with expectations and rules. Connecticut Turning to Youth and Families realizes that each youth and family seeking help comes from a different background and set of experiences and our recovery coaches work to provide whatever help or resources may be needed. No matter what phase you or your family member may be in, we are here to offer support, information and guidance.
